Continuing Education

Visit the Florida DOH official Continuing Education page for complete details about continuing education requirements.
As a condition of the biennial renewal of a license, each licensee shall be required to complete continuing education courses as stated in Rule 64B5-12.013, Florida Administrative Code, which are relevant to, and which enhance the licensee's ability to practice. Licensees shall not be required to complete continuing education requirements during the biennium in which they receive initial licensure. The current biennium is March 1, 2008-February 28, 2010.
Dental hygienists must attain 24 hours of continuing education which must include:

  • 2 hours in the prevention of medical errors

  • 2 hours in domestic violence (every third biennium)

  • In addition to the 24 hours, each dental hygienist must complete a CPR course at the basic life support level, which includes training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the basic support level, including one-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants; the relief of foreign body airway obstructions for adults, children, and infants; the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED); and the use of ambu-bags resulting in certification or recertification by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or an entity with equivalent requirements.

All credit hours must be earned within the biennium for which they are claimed. Do not send proof of CE hours unless you are audited. Audits will be conducted at random to insure compliance with CE requirements.

Important Updates

  • Effective May 11, 2005, dentists and dental hygienists are no longer required to complete instruction in laws, rules and ethics governing the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene to renew their license. However, this course may be taken and applied toward the continuing education requirements.

  • Domestic Violence can now be included in the 24 hours of required continuing education.

If you have any other questions, please contact:

  • FDHA at (860) 896-0603, or

  • Board of Dentistry at (850) 245-4474

NOTE

  • All continuing education courses that are provided by GCDHA are 2 CE’s and are submitted to CE Broker.
  • All members must bring ADHA membership card (plastic or printed from ADHA website) or recent copy of Access journal with mailing label attached to prove active membership. Unfortunately, we have had RDH’s saying they are members and they are not. It is unfair to members who pay dues and non-members who pay continuing education credit fees.
  • Continuing Education credits are free for ADHA members; non-members pay $15.00 per credit hour. Two unit continuing credits courses are $30.00. Cash or checks made out to GCDHA are acceptable. The exception is the CPR renewal course where the speaker fees determine the fee schedule. Fees for that course will be posted on the website when they are available.
  • If you are only attending the Continuing Education course, please arrive prior to 7:00 to prevent disrupting the guest speaker.
  • CHECK WEBSITE MONTHLY FOR MEETING LOCATIONS.
  • No meetings are held in July and August.
