President's Message

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Charles Dickens

Now is the time to express gratitude for all that we have. Times are bad; the economy affects our work or lack of work, and everyone we know. The constant barrage of negative news affects our patients, our families or friends every day. The good news is, hopefully, that we have our health and we can rely on our friends and family to help us through the next couple of years so we can concentrate on what is right with our world.

Gulf Coast Dental Hygiene Association has many good things going for it:
Website

We have a website donated at no cost to us by Linda Belaus, CDA, RDH that keeps us and other hygienists from other parts of the country that visit our area in the winter months informed of changes in the hygiene world. How refreshing to know that several hygienists from other states attended our meetings last year and were thankful for our organization to welcome them with open arms and provide them with current, interesting speakers.
The website personnel are always great to include any changes that occur to scheduled meetings or provide current topics. RDH’s that do not visit the website will have to wait till a scheduled meeting to learn about current news such as the rule changes regarding fluoride varnishes and sealants. Please check the website at least once a month to find out current news, schedule changes, and the latest events.

Officers

The officers from 2008-2009 committed to serve the hygienists of Lee County again for the 2009-2010 year. Lynn Van Cavage, our Vice-President, has scheduled another great roster of Continuing Ed speakers for the 2009-2010 year. Check out the Continuing Ed section for a preview and be aware of any changes that might occur. Clori Atkins crunches our numbers for the budget, Brenda Cummins takes excellent minutes, Mary Seyfried, Lynn and I will attend the FDHA Symposium to represent you and bring back news from the state and national level. Brenda Thomas is instrumental for the printing and mailing of the newsletter along with all the other things she does to keep GCDHA afloat. Deb Hart will donate her time and talents for the FDHA basket and keep the officers in line as the Member Representative. All of the ladies that I work with are such talented, giving people. Please take a moment to thank them for all that they do, I know I really appreciate them.

Members

Unfortunately over the years we have lost friends and members to other professions, sickness, death, and relocating. We still have a core group who attend every meeting that they can and support this organization. I am thankful that they come whether it is just for the Continuing Ed or for the networking that helps us relate to someone who “knows the ropes”. We welcome non-members to share in the convenient cost effective Continuing Ed courses and hope they will consider membership.

GCDHA is a place that you can come to once a month and share with your colleagues and friends. In the end no matter what is happening in the world around us it is the relationships and support from those we know who help us get through each day.
Please join us.

Gwen Herron, RDH, BASDH
2009-2010 President, Gulf Coast Dental Hygiene Association
